Explorations In Australia

Explorations In Australia by John Forrest, Illust by G.F. Angas
Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle London 1875
Explorations in search of Dr. Leichardt and party - From Perth to Adelaide, around the Great Australian Bight - From Champion Bay, across the Desert to the Telegraph and Adelaide - With an appendix on the condition of Western Australia. Unlike other explorers, Forrest was fortunate with the rain & had access to earlier maps from Gosses expedition which directed him to several water holes.
This is an important account of Forrests successful exploration, in which he became the first person to cross the Australian continent West to East. Full accounts of Forrests two expeditions of 1869 and 1870 as well as the main account of his most important expedition in 1874 across the interior, from the west coast to the Telegraph Line. A work of great significance which should be in everyones collection of Australiana.
Forrest began his first expedition as Government Surveyor in 1869, at the age of twenty-one, setting out from Perth in search of traces of Leichhardt. The expedition ascertained that rumours which referred to a party of white men being slain by local Aborigines twenty years before did not relate to Leichhardts party but to Robert Austins expedition. Forrest went on to the east of Lake Barlee to Mount Weld before returning to Perth. On Forrests return another expedition in search of Leichhardt was mooted - this time to travel from the Murchison River to Carpentaria. However lack of funds prevented so extensive an expedition, and instead it was proposed that Forrest cross from Perth to Adelaide, around the Great Australian Bight, in search of farming land. By taking the coastal route, the crossing was achieved by Forrest in an extraordinary five months. This feat, which had taken Eyre over twelve months to complete, is a testament to Forrests formidable abilities as an explorer and professional surveyor, and to that of his brother Alexander who was his second-in-command.The success of Forrests first two expeditions spurred him on in 1874 to take on the last great challenge of Australian inland exploration: to ascertain the nature of the interior by crossing the continent from Perth to the Telegraph Line which ran between Darwin and Adelaide. Again Forrest triumphed and firmly established his reputation as one of the great Australian explorers of the western interior. Forrest later became premier of Western Australia and first Baron Forrest of Bunbury.

Aesop''s Fables - A New Translation
 |
Aesops Fables
A New Translation by V. S. Vernon Jones, With an Introduction by G. K. Chesterton and Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. Published in London by William Heinemann, 1912.
This first edition has 13 color plates and 53 black-and-white drawings, many full-page, by Arthur Rackham. Rackham illustrates such classic morality tales as "The Hare and the Tortoise," "The Fox and the Grapes," "The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse," "The Fir-tree and the Bramble" and "The Shipwrecked Man and the Sea." "The Aesop illustrations contain several self-caricatures of Rackham, including the man who catches the flea". Rackham"s artitistic ability was recognized early and he developed his talents over a lifetime of work. He had a penchant for the fantastic and many of the subjects he drew displayed dark or disturbing characteristics. The "Fables" was one of a series of yearly publications illustrated by Rackham for the Christmas season. It is somewhat unusual in that there are several self caricatures and a drawing of his home in Chalot Gardens.
Rackham was well-suited to give us these classic animal tales and his creatures are wonderful. There is a quality that presents the morality tales with a touch of softness to the youthful reader.
A nice copy of a special children"s book.
Filled with the classic fables we all know and love including The Fox and the Grapes, The Cat and the Mice, The Bear and the Fox and tons more. Introduction by G.K. Chesterton.
Between 620 and 560 B.C. Aesop, a freedman, came to the court of Croesus, King of Lydia in Asia Minor. Aesop had been a slave on the island of Iadmon and had gained some fame as a narrator of tales about animals. Aesop gained favour with Croesus and eventually became employed as a sort of Ambassador to various Greek capitals. At Corinth he warned against mob rule in a fable latyer used by Socrates. In athens he used the fable The Frogs Desiring a King to examplify leaving well enough alone. Unfortunately, in Delphi , he was accused unjustly of theft and put to death. However, his famed lived on and 200 years after his death a statue of him was erected in Athens and placed in front of the Seven Sages.
After more than 2 and a half centuries the essence and body of Aesops fables are still alive and enjoyed and pondered over in many languages around the world.

A Book of Scoundrels by Charles Whibley
A Book of Scoundrels was first published by William Heinemann 1896, some chapters originally appeared in the National Observer, New Review, Pall Mall Gazette and Macmillan''s Magazine.
This list of "scoundrels" includes stories of Captain Hind; Moll Cutpurse and Jonathan Wild; Ralph Briscoe; Gilderoy and Sixteen-String Jack; George Barrington; The Switcher and Gentleman Harry; Deacon Brodie and Charles Peace; Monsieur L''Abbe, Sheppard and Cartouche;
Of all the heroes who have waged a private and undeclared war upon their neighbours, Louis-Dominique Cartouche was the most generously endowed. Bab Ballads And Savoy Songs

Bab Ballads and Savoy Songs
A book of ballads and songs by W.S.Gilbert, English dramatist and writer of humorous verse, he is best remembered as librettist of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas.
I collected the most popular of the songs and ballads which I had written for the series of light operas with which my name is associated, and published them under the title of "Songs of a Savoyard". It recently occurred to me that these songs had so much in common with "The Bab Ballads" that it might be advisable to weld the two books into one. This is, briefly, the history of the present volume.
Gilbert wrote a large number of ballads for the magazine Fun using his pen-name Bab. These Bab Ballads became famous on their own, as well as being a source for plots and songs for the Grand Operas.
Contains ''The Yarn of The Nancy Bell'', ''Captain Reece'', ''The Bishop and the Busman'' and many others.
The book is illustrated with black and white drawing illustrations by the author.
His creative output included over 75 plays and libretti, numerous stories, poems, lyrics and various other comic pieces. Often associated with his musical collaborator, the composer Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan, Sir William Schwenck Gilbert was a dramatist, published poet, and satirist before composing the lyrics for the operettas that have immortalized his name. Born in London on 18 November 1836, the son of a retired naval surgeon, he traveled with his parents throughout Europe, and at the age of two was kidnapped and held for ransom by Italian bandits. Returning with his family (which included three sisters) to London in 1849, he studied first at the Great Ealing School and then at King''s College, but decided upon a career in the military as an artillery officer rather than continue studies at Oxford. However, just as he finished his military training the Crimean War ended, and he found employment as a clerk of the Privy Council at the Educational Department (1857 to 1864).
Gilbert himself explained how the Bab Ballads came about:
In 1861 Fun was started, under the editorship of Mr H. J. Byron. With much labour I turned out an article three-quarters of a column long, and sent it to the editor, together with a half-page drawing on wood. A day or two later the printer of the paper called upon me, with Mr Byron''s compliments, and staggered me with a request to contribute a column of ''copy'' and a half-page drawing every wekk for the term of my natural life. I hardly knew how to treat the offer, for it seemed to me that into that short article I had poured all I knew. I was empty. I had exhausted myself: I didn''t know any more. However, the printer encouraged me (with Mr Byron''s compliments), and I said I would try. I did try, and I found to my surprise that there was a little left, and enough indeed to enable me to contribute some hundreds of columns to the periodical throughout his editorship, and that of his successor, poor Tom Hood! (Gilbert, 1883).
Finally, in 1897, Gilbert produced The Bab Ballads with which are included Songs of a Savoyard. This volume included all of the Bab Ballads that had appeared in any of the earlier collected volumes, the sixty-nine "Songs of a Savoyard" from the 1890 volume, and eighteen additional lyrics in the same format from the four new operas he had written since then. The Bab Ballads and illustrated opera lyrics alternated, creating the impression of one integrated body of work.
